Emerson College Little Building Cabaret

Boston, MA

    Project Overview

Suffolk delivered the meticulous historic renovation of Emerson College’s Little Building, including the college’s new Cabaret space located on the building’s basement level.

The Little Building was originally built as an office building in 1917 and was later converted to a dormitory and dining hall in 1995.

The Cabaret project consisted of transforming the core and shell basement into a new performing arts space. Included within the Cabaret are five studio spaces, two black box theaters with control rooms and attached dressing rooms, and additional support space.

Creativity and keen attention to detail were necessary when coordinating the theatrical lighting, AV, and rigging as the building was not originally designed to accommodate such systems. All required systems were shoe-horned into the space in order for proper functionality. Construction was performed with minimal impact to the 1,100-bed dorm on the floor directly above the area.
