The new Café Ventanas, located at Eleanor Roosevelt College at UC San Diego was completed as part of a transformation of dated dining facilities on campus into more modern and vibrant settings.
The campus dining renovation features a full-service coffee house and numerous branded restaurants featuring cuisines from India, Africa, the Caribbean and parts of South America. Additionally, upgrades were made to the indoor and outdoor seating areas as well as improvements to the amphitheater patio.
Suffolk’s value engineering process led to strategic decisions that contributed to the project’s success. During the value engineering exploration, Suffolk assessed project finishes and recommended alternative solutions for the university that optimized cost-effectiveness without sacrificing quality or performance. Suffolk early released electrical and kitchen equipment which resulted in timely deliveries and turning the space over to the university on time.
The café renovation took place on an active campus environment. Suffolk mitigated the impacts of construction by constant communication and upfront planning. Our team scheduled noisy work during “off-peak” hours for the students. We also executed dust control measures (barriers, dust screens) and safety measures (signage, safe egress, safe pathways).
