As part of Lawrence + Memorial Hospital’s master facility plan, Suffolk managed construction of a 47,000 square-foot, comprehensive cancer center on an undeveloped 100-acre site.
The project followed a true three-party Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) contract between the hospital, architecture firm Smith Group, and Suffolk.
The 2-story facility features radiation and medical oncology programs and the installation of linear accelerators and other state-of-the-art equipment, exam rooms, offices, and support space.
The project team utilized the Production, Preparation, and Process (3P) Lean design approach and pull planning tools to allow for more decision making and knowledge sharing early in the planning process.
Over 60 patients, physicians, nurses, and staff participated in a three-day 3P event. A co-location site, a dedicated planning space for all project stakeholders, was also developed at the hospital to provide ongoing collaboration throughout the project.
Sustainable features include extensive use of natural light, a geothermal system, and chilled beams. Interior finishes were chosen to satisfy LEED requirements and require less maintenance over time than traditional healthcare finishes.
