What is the most exciting thing about working in this business? What is your professional passion?
What really excites me about my role at Suffolk is being part of a leadership team whose goal is to fundamentally change the building experience. The physical spaces in which we work, live, and play have a profound impact on our well-being. The opportunity to use information analysis techniques (considered by many to be very abstract and esoteric) to have a meaningful impact on the lives of many is where I find meaning in my work.
What do you love to do when you aren’t at work? What is your personal passion and why?
I love travelling! I’ve lived in Asia, America and Europe and enjoyed my time on all three continents. My personal passion is exploration, followed closely by reflection—learning from other perspectives to shape my own path.
What is your favorite community cause or philanthropic organization to support and why?
Another passion of mine is food and wellness, and I’m interested in supporting organizations that give children the opportunity to be meaningfully involved in sustainable agriculture and the natural environment. School gardens, for example, are becoming popular as a way of educating children about the food cycle. I have also taken an interest in other programs that involve community farms, urban gardens, etc.
What innovation have you seen in the construction industry that has made the most impact? Where do you see the opportunity for further innovation?
One of the most impressive consumer technologies I have started using is the chatbot interface (via Smarthome devices like Amazon’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri, and/or Google’s Home Assistant). It’s a great example of a technology that has a brilliantly simple interface with profound layers of artificial intelligence built in. It helps, rather than hinders or over-complicates, everyday life.
What book has helped you most in your career?
When I was transitioning into a leadership role, I really enjoyed the book “Conscious Business—How to build value through values.” It describes organizations as conscious communities that are collectively committed to achieving a vision that exceeds any individual’s capacities. The book also provides a roadmap for developing into an authentic and inspirational leader. I’m still learning from this book to this day.
