The Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) is a key element that links Northeastern’s Huntington Avenue campus with a new academic district on Columbus Avenue.
This new 230,000 square foot facility faced challenging site constraints as it is situated adjacent to MBTA railroad tracks and an active parking structure, and consideration for future buildings needed to be taken into account. ISEC’s six stories and basement level feature wet and dry labs, computational research spaces, and collaboration areas throughout. Additionally, the complex provides offices to house Northeastern’s rapidly growing faculty. To facilitate connections among researchers, a magnificent atrium includes a corkscrew stair which Suffolk installed by lowering it as one piece through the roof. Students from across campus fill the building at all times of day to utilize the classrooms, study areas, and cafés.
